Islands of the South Pacific

by Maureen Woodward on February 10, 2010
As a region, the South Pacific is filled with outstanding attractions. But each of the thirteen member countries that make up the South Pacific Tourism Organisation has its own special and individual allure. These enchanting islands and beautiful people have for hundreds of years stirred the mind and excited the imagination. Are you looking to escape your everyday? Try one of the many alluring islands in this tropical haven.

Tahiti
By far the most popular and well known of the bunch, Tahiti is recognized as the most colorful of all the islands. Tahiti and her islands offer a myriad of land and sea activities that will reveal to you the dazzling panorama of their magnificent scenery. The Polynesians of these lands of great beauty and natural abundance express their joie de vivre, willingly shared with all, in their dances, in their music, in the power of their brassy church choirs and in their wild and free canoes as they fly through the waves.

Cook Islands
The Cooks have avoided all of the hype the South Pacific has received over the years, allowing life to move a little slower there. Walk about in a pareau (sarong), adorn yourself with flowers, blend in with your local hosts, and enjoy the unspoiled nature of this dream destination. Relax and rejuvenate your soul on one of the many beautiful beaches. Experience the rhythm of the music and dancing. Feast on many exotic South Pacific foods. Above all, consider how life's simple pleasures are easily available for all to share.

Fiji
This region is known as the "Crossroads of the South Pacific" because of its strategic placement. It is home to people who have been called the friendliest on earth. It is made up of a chain of over 300 islands and is a cosmopolitan cocktail of culture, race and religion. It is a place where "bula," the traditional Fijian greeting, is a very special word and you can relax without a care in the world.

Solomon Islands
This unspoiled series of islands is an eco-tourist's dream! The setting for some of World War II's most fierce and bloody battles is home to one of the most natural and peaceful places in the South Pacific. Here, in this archipelago of mountainous islands and low-lying coral atolls, you can experience the undiscovered delights of a primitive culture that has not allowed the advances of the outside world to overshadow it. The second largest island chain in the region, the population of the Solomon Islands of approximately 400,000 is spread across an area of 28,530 km.
